How did you get into Farming?
I grew up on two family farms, where my siblings and I spent countless hours helping my two grandfathers. From a young age age we where entrusted to check, tag and select animals for slaughter
What do you enjoy most about it?
Being a pedigree breeder of several breeds of livestock, I take great enjoyment in trying to better my stock. I would like to get to the point where I can walk into the field and feel happy with every animal in it.
How has young farmers influenced you?
Kent Young Farmers introduced me to livestock showing. Within KFYFC ( Kent Federation of Young Farmers Clubs) we have a strong culture of livestock showing that can be found in no other county federation. I now compete all summer over the South East and East Anglia with my kerry hills and am very excited to add poll Dorsets to my show team.
What are your plans for the future?
I am currently vice chairman within both Kent and South East Area Young Farmers. I have ambitions to chair both in the future and potentially higher up into national. My goals for the Dorsets are to be able to show lambs successfully within 3-4 years.
How many Dorsets have you and how are you getting on with them?
I currently only have 8 Dorsets with aims to grow the flock to 20-30 ewes. I really enjoy working with the Dorsets in contrast to the Kerrys and herdwicks, this is because they flock together and don’t climb out of holding pens! I find them to be so quiet a relaxed that I enjoy going to sit with them for an hour or so each evening.
